Dark Dispatches - AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE

Dark Dispatches edited by George Wilhite

CLOSED AND FULL--IN EDITING

I am looking for stories about war, real or imagined, here on Earth or elsewhere, in any time period--past, present or future. Does war bring out the best or worst in your characters? Heroes/Villains can be Human, Alien or Supernatural Beings. You decide.

So, the war itself can be historical truth, but some speculative element must be added. Beyond that—use your imagination!

ALL STORIES MUST CONTAIN ELEMENTS OF HORROR—fantasy and science fiction hybrid is OK, but the prevailing genre is HORROR.

Send submissions to geojazz@sbcglobal.net with “Dark Dispatches” in the subject line. Send the story as an attachment—Word doc or rtf.

Please send one story at a time. I prefer stories in the 1500-5000 word range, but will consider any length. Query first for reprints and longer works. No need to query for flash if you have a good one.

FORMAT:

Please send submissions like this: Title, name, content, bio. The bio must be at the end of the story in the manuscript. Single space, indented paragraphs, no space between paragraphs. Scene breaks should be shown with a CENTERED ***

Also, if you have not submitted to a Static Movement anthology before, please check out Chris Bartholomew’s guidelines at: http://www.staticmovement.com/guidelines.shtml

Looking foward to it, Darren. This is wide open so there should be an incredible variety.

I have a reprint that might work for this. It's about an alien attack in seventeenth century Japan, were a young blacksmith makes his way through a battlefield between Alien and Samurai in search for the woman he loves.

That story sounds like a perfect fit to me. As long as you retain the rights, send it in! and yeah, another great cover!!

I'm trying to figure out whether I have the right to the story or not. I'm looking back at the contract and it is very contradictory, and while I gave away first print rights to an end of the year anthology, the anthology was canceled and as part of the terms of the contract, as far as I can tell, those rights are in exchange for a contributors copy an anthology that never happened. It also says rights are only for the year it was published. It was published electronically just over a year ago, and there is no time frame given to how long the market will attain rights to my story in general, and further more, I don't think the market is even publishing anymore and I have complete nonexclusive foreign rights and non-exclusive print rights once the anthology that never was, was published. Anyway, I suck at determining all this technical stuff. I'll try to figure it out and get back to you on it, I'd really like to see it in this anthology.

I'm not sure, but is a contract void if the publisher fails to meet one of the requirements agree upon in the contract from their end?

You should find a reversion clause in the contract that says something like "the publisher reverts the rights to the author in the even the volume isn't published" or maybe If the anthology is not printed then the rights revert to the author" or something like that.

If the anthology was never published, and the rights were only for that year it was supposed to be published... it's your story. I believe you own the rights because the deal fell through, they can't hold onto rights for something they aren't publishing. You could try to contact them, and if you can't contact them, I would look at that as them giving the rights back anyway.

Without seeing it, I don't know what else to say.
Contracts should have some sort of "failure to perform" clause for both sides.

Thanks for the help guys. I just want to make sure I'm not screwing anyone over. I emailed the editor about it, he's always been cool in my previous dealings with him, so we'll see what he says.
