Visions Across 20 Light Years

An Anthology edited by Jason Barney

Email stories to: admiralriker_jay@yahoo.com

In September of 2010 scientists made a long awaited announcement. Orbiting a red dwarf star about 20 light years distant, is Gliese 581g, the first planet we have been able to detect within its parent star’s habitable zone. While we don’t know if life exists there, this anthology is devoted to the potential this discovery represents.

I would like to see your Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror/Thriller/Adventure stories that explore this wondrous discovery. Tell me about the civilizations that develop on this world. Let me know about the people that would live on this harsh planet. Do civilizations exist there, or do other species study the indigenous life forms? Chronicle their first contact with humanity or with other races. Explore the possibilities…

Here is what we know about the Gliese 581 star system to help you develop your story: The star is a red dwarf, smaller than our own. 581g is one of several worlds in the system, but is the only one in the habitable zone. The planet orbits its star once every 37 days and is tidally locked, meaning one side always faces the star; the other always faces away from it. Scientists believe conditions for liquid water existing are prime, especially within a crescent like zone where the surface is not too cold or too hot. The planet is likely 3 or 4 times more massive than Earth, with gravity that would have triple the pull. Feel free to move away from these if your story needs it.

Please send stories saved in rtf. format. Single space, indented paragraphs, no space between paragraphs. No headers, footers, page numbers or embedded text.

Submissions will be accepted until the anthology is full. Rough 4,000 word maximum, no minimum.

Send in your ideas and concepts about this new world, and help Static Movement create an anthology exploring astronomy that is on the front page of newspapers!

***This is a for the love anthology*** No payment, no contributor copies.

Please send one story at a time... and do not send the same story to more than one of our anthologies, it is wasting time for us and might get you rejected from all of them. Thanks. (This is a publisher note)

I love this. Not only because I am a physicist and the NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador for the Great State of Tennessee (2008), but also because I am a poet and had written a poem when Gliese 581c (Super Earth) was discovered in April 2007. Since then, amateur optical astronomers had found (and confirmed by NASA that that planet was a bit too close to the red dwarf to be in the habitable zone (which really only means the conditions would support liquid water and a sustainable atmosphere).Needless to say, I had resurrected that poem (Waterworld). Though that poem is slated for other markets, I will try very hard to make a contribution to this anthology :-)

Jason, AWESOME theme for an anthology. I would love to contribute to this but while I can create great science fiction ideas, I am soooo not the writer to pull them off in prose. So I'll have to be a spectator on this one, and I can't wait to see the results!

Stellar cover, btw!

Ooo. . .stop with the awesome anthology ideas!!! I could kiss you, virtually of course. I had a dream about Gliese 581g the other night and it's a perfect start for a story.

Sorry. I do gush now and again.

John - just read your a physicist for NASA and now I'm scared. If I get stuck on any science questions can I pick your brains?

My story for this is about 1,300 words so far. It shouldn't be much more. I'll probably finish it up at work tomorrow.

Very cool, Jason! As soon as I figure out exactly what this one is all about (as it seems right up my alley), I'll try and find the time to put something together for it. Might taken a little while, though.

great idea for an anthology, wish I could do something for it but am currently stuck in a horror book and a relatively modern biographical book (with a deadline looming on the latter...) but will be looking out for it. Sounds tremendous, what a way to set the imagination soaring! ;D

We have our first acceptance to "Visions Across 20 Light Years"

Congratulations to Joe Jablonski. His story, "Ghosts of the Dusk Meridian" has been accepted.
