Gifted
Edited by Danielle Rose

The idea of having powers crosses everyone’s mind at some point. How would the world be? What powers would you have? Could you fly? See the future? Telekinetic? Or would you simply be immortal? Does everyone have powers or are there only a few blessed? Is it even a blessing? I’m open to different plots, so play with the theme.

Guidelines:

Length – Stories in the 2,500- 4,500 range have the best shot of getting in but anything from 1,000-7,500 is okay. Query first with longer lengths.

Format – Please attach your story as an rtf, doc, or docx file. Single space with indented paragraphs (at .05). No headers, footers, page numbers, or embedded text. 12 pt font in Georgia style. One inch margins. Please include a 50-word third-person bio after your story. Scene breaks are done with three asterisks (***), centered, no spaces between them. Only one space after periods. The first two words of your story should be bolded. (I added that last one to see if you’re actually paying attention.)

How to send – Please submit all stories to SMsubmissions (at) hotmail (dot) com. Include your cover letter in the body of the email. In the subject line of the email, please write the name of the anthology you’re submitting to (this part is very important as I have several different anthologies).

Content – Sex, blood, and gore are fine as long as they serve the story. I don’t want anything gratuitous or intended to shock the audience.

Editing – Please edit you story before sending it. I don’t want to see then/than mistakes. At this point, you should know the difference—along with to/too/two, they’re/there/their, etc. Hyphenate words that need it.

Simultaneous submissions are great. Reprints are great, too; just let me know who published it first.

I will try to respond within two weeks. If you haven’t heard anything within four, please query.

This is a non-paying market.

NOTE: I will send your piece back, without reading it, if it isn’t in the format listed above. Days—literally, days—are spent reformatting stories, and honestly, that takes a lot of time away from what we’re here to do: publish! I’m not sending your work back to be mean or lazy. I am sending it back, because following directions are a high expectation in the publishing industry. Taking a look at big house publishers (such as Penguin, Random House, etc.), your piece would be instantly rejected if every listed requirement wasn’t followed. Small presses shouldn’t be considered any differently by writers. So please follow the guidelines closely. Thank you.
