Deathly Encounters
Edited by Danielle Rose

Ghosts, ghouls, demons, and phantoms. They’re known by many names, and their intentions are unmistakable. In these stories, I’m looking for character-driven plots that focus on why spirits don’t move on. What unfinished business does your character have? Are they vengeful spirits or simply lost souls? Only ghost-related stories for this one, please.

Guidelines:

Length – Stories in the 2,500- 4,500 range have the best shot of getting in but anything from 1,000-7,500 is okay. Query first with longer lengths.

Content – Sex, blood, and gore are fine as long as they serve the story. I don’t want anything gratuitous or intended to shock the audience.

Format – Please attach your story as an rtf, doc, or docx file. Single space with indented paragraphs. No headers, footers, page numbers, or embedded text. Please include a 50-word third-person bio after your story.

How to send – Please submit all stories to SMsubmissions (at) hotmail (dot) com. Include your cover letter in the body of the email. In the subject line of the email, please write the name of the anthology you’re submitting to (this part is very important as I have several different anthologies).

Simultaneous submissions are great. Reprints are great, too, just let me know who published it first.

I will try to respond within two weeks. If you haven’t heard anything within four weeks, please query.

This is a non-paying market.

That's a spooky set of eyes on that cover
Have you seen that another piece of Japan, a giant piece of dock from Misawa, arrived in Oregon recently? Now that's a challenge.

It sure is pretty spooky!

I'm worried Danielle,
I sent a story and have not heard a word about it. Apparently you are reading stories that got there after mine would have. Did the email go goofy again? It does that and drives me crazy.

Hi Dave.

Thank you for your query. I understand the frustration in both technology and awaiting an acceptance/rejection. :)

You should have received an automatic reply once you submitting to show that I received it. Did you receive that? If not, please let me know, so I can look into it.

I do read submissions in the order I receive them, and I read several a day. Currently, your submissions is tenth on my list. I hoped that I would receive a flood of submissions like this, so I made sure to let authors know that I will take about two weeks to respond to submissions.

I apologize for the wait, because I know how exciting it can be, but I am confident that I will get to your submission by Monday.

If you ever have any questions, feel free to send me an email. I respond to all queries on the same day.

Thanks again! :)
