Fightin' Jack - Open for Submissions
« Thread Started on Jan 16, 2011, 5:25pm »

___________________
Louis Shosty came up for the idea for this anthology, and here is what he says about Fightin' Jack:

Here's the idea that came to my mind. Imagine a multiverse, and in this multiverse is a figure who recurs in every possible permutation, someone called Fightin' Jack. Who he is, what he does, where he lives, the laws which govern the universe where he lives, are all variable. Black, White, Asian, or Latino, it doesn't matter. Cowboy, spacer, antiques salesman, President, boxer, vampire, or medieval swordsman, an intelligent spaceship, again it doesn't matter. There's nothing to say that Jack could not be short for Jacqueline, even. Endless possibilities, in other words.

The only thing that is eternal is, Jack is six feet, two inches, rather brawny, with dark hair, and a nose flattened by one too many shots to the face. He/she is plain of speech and direct in action, and courageous, even in the face of certain death. If he says he's going to do something, he means it. Subtlety is not a strong point with him. It doesn't mean he might not try a soft approach. It just means he wouldn't be very good at it and would chafe at the idea of it, as it does not come naturally to him. The idea is that no matter what might change, the basic character of a person remains the same. There's also a tip of the hat to physiognomy in Jack's appearance, too, as his rather pugnacious outward appearance points directly to these blunt traits. Could he be villainous? Absolutely. Everyone has a little good and a little bad in them, and environmental factors are always key in a person's development. He could be a sadist, a pacifist, happy-go-lucky and adventurous, grim and cautious, or just about anything else one could imagine. He may even look different than the description I've given. For instance, he could be a person stricken with dwarfism, but there would have to be some kind of explanation for it, like a curse, or perhaps he has switched bodies, etc.
______________
Your story does not have to center around Jack, but he must 'appear' at least once and do something. I've made this horror, so the stories must be dark.

No word limit.

Single space, indented paragraphs with no space between paragraphs. No headers, footers, no page numbers. Title, your name, start the story one line down. Please do put your bio at the end of the story in the manuscript. Please, no sim subs. Any anthology I edit, I get back to you the same day you send it in, so surely you have one day's worth of patience. Thanks.

Open until filled.

No payment is made nor copy given for this anthology.

This is an interesting idea, it certainly get the creative juices flowing anyway! So many possibilities, well done Louis.

Perhaps I missed something in the fine print (always a possibility for me), but what is the minimum or maximum length for stories? I might have an idea to contribute (involving a character from one of my horror novels whose first name is Jack - short for Jackson - meeting his parallel universe fighting doppelganger) sometime in February after other things I need to write are done, and just wanted to know about story lengths for this one.

Would it be wrong of me to transform Jack into the Creature from the Black Lagoon during the course of the story?
