Gypsies and Giants edited by Adam Francis Smith

Call for Submissions – Gypsies and Giants

I am seeking submissions for an anthology of stories with gypsies or giants appearing within. Both need not appear in your story, but both may.

TOPIC: I’d like to see stories spanning the genres, with, for example: magic-wielding gypsies, ancient giant creatures such as dinosaurs, space-faring gypsies, giant planets and perhaps even a gypsy detective or someone deeply entrenched in the darkest side of the lifestyle. Anything goes, really – surprise me with your creativity.

CAUTION: Jack in the Beanstalk stories and stories about modern-day Romani families will be hard sells.

SUBMISSION LENGTH: Submissions should be between 1,000 – 7,500 words – I'll also be happy to look at flash fiction for this anthology and may accept one or two micro-fiction pieces. Longer pieces are welcome, but as with all stories, they must keep moving. Feel free to query on anything not covered by these guidelines.

NOTE: It would be very interesting to have contributors sending two stories, one covering each: Gypsies and Giants.

FORMAT: Usual Static Movement formatting rules apply: single space with indented paragraphs, no space between paragraphs and standard 12 font. Use centered *** for scene breaks, and please put your bio at the end of the story in the manuscript. Please make sure your story is how you want it to appear in print, and pay attention to grammar and punctuation!

WHERE TO SEND SUBMISSIONS: Please send your submissions with ‘G&G’ in the subject line to asmith.chicago@gmail.com

DEADLINE: This anthology is opened until filled and is a 'for the love' of anthology, except for the three Editors' Choice awards discussed below.

PAYMENT: There will be three "Editors' Choice" awards for outstanding submissions. The stories will be identified as Editors' Choice winners and there will be a prize of $15.00 USD for each of the three winners that will be paid upon publication of the anthology. Otherwise, no copies or payment, this one's exposure only.

And yet more thanks, Chris. I'm very excited about this project. I do hope there are interested writers.

Adam

The cover is perfect. Classy and classical, and lends itself to being used again, should a series of ________ and __________ anthologies come to be.

Okay folks, the cover has been up for three minutes and I don't have any submissions yet. Sheesh!

Thank you Jessy and Chris.

Thanks, Dorothy. I only get credit for the idea, and how amazing it turns out is up to the authors; though I do not doubt for a second that it will be spectacular.

I'm proud to announce the first acceptances for Gypsies and Giants. Ron Koppleberger has crafted two gorgeous pieces, "The Gifted Giant" and "An Enchanting Hold" - both are laced with Ron's unique use of words and his poetic essence, and I'm very pleased to have them.

We are at 13,276 words as of June 1, 2013. I have no new submissions in the hopper at this point, so please spread the word, or consider working something up within the theme.

I have sent out email acceptances and rejections for all of the stories and a poem that I was holding.

I would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during the long period in which I held some of these manuscripts. I was only hoping to round out the balance within the book.

Time is fleeting and it had not occurred to me how long I had been holding on to some of them and I’m deeply sorry, but I was very grateful to get them and I am very pleased with the quality of the submissions.

The newest “accepteds” will be added to the Table Of Contents above when I get the contracts back. They total another 11,000 words.

I have done some solicitations on a couple of new social sites I belong to and I’ll focus much more on this book in the weeks to come, with issues in the “real” world resolved, I’ll have the necessary time.

If you have submitted to me and do not hear from me by June 1st, please email me at asmith.chicago@gmail.com and put Gypsies and Giants in the subject line and I’ll respond to your query.

Check your titles and names above, folks, and let me know if anything does not appear correct, please.

Thanks again for the patience. I am committed to this book and have overcome some of the issues that had been keeping me away, but I won’t make excuses. I certainly should have responded sooner to the last few submissions and I’ll do my best to be quicker in the future, and to update her more frequently.

Sincerely,

Adam

Just accepted The Day We Found Paul Bunyan by Brianna Stoddard with many thanks. It's a well-written piece that breathes new life into an old legend.

Glad to make it in. I don't think I will have a gypsy story for this one though. Maybe later on I'll get inspired, maybe not. Thanks a lot for the acceptance though!

Brianna, it was a pleasure "working" with you on this one. I know I'm a pain and I appreciate your patience and understanding. I have the feeling this one will be open for a while, so I won't hold my breath, but I'll anticipate/hope for a Gypsy tale from you!

The Reservoir of All Things has been accepted. This is a terrfiically original story that certainly portrays giants in a creative light, and presents a unique and compelling world and a mythology of significant depth. Thanks to Robert Shmigelsky, for his great story and willingness to add a short introduction to the story!

I'll be giving preference to Gypsy stories until the count is balanced out. Right now we are at 3 giants and 1 gypsy story. I won't reject Giant stories, but may take a little time responding, holding them to see if any Gypsy stories are forthcoming.

Does it matter to you if the Gypsy channels and quotes Albert Camus? I realize that is an unusual questions but dead French existentialist philosophers can be problematic. I mean, I would never quote Proust in a gypsy story but Camus is one of my philosophic buddies just as French Fries with salt are one of my favorite food groups. So would it bother you greatly if the musings of Albert Camus showed up in about 5K words, maybe more.

"At any street corner the feeling of absurdity can strike any man in the face. "

Therefore, how absurd could it be for a gypsy to channel and quote Camus? Besides, if the gypsy were channeling Camus, it wouldn't necessarily be a quote, rather, a translation perhaps.

Go for it. And I'd very much welcome a submission from you Dave. Thanks :)

On another note: I do have 2 submissions to respond to. I was holding off, awaiting more, but they're coming in slow, so I'll respond in the next day or so. Thanks for everyone's patience, and please send me something if you haven't already.

Absurd is indeed the word and the meme. It is a Fool's journey through an absurd World. (0 to 21 in seconds)
Sometime next week I hope I will be done. It's all coming together to a truly unexpected ending.
